Cabbagetown's Best-Known Haunted House -
A Friendly Ghost...
308 Carlton Street
It is said that the young teenage daughter of Benjamin Brick – the builder of 308 and 314 Carlton Street – is haunting this house. She died as an early teen, at the end of the 1890s or early 1900s, apparently of septicemia (blood poisoning).
She apparently changes and straightens up items in the hallways and the rooms. On cold winter nights, she scribbles words or draws simple images in the frosted windows.
She is sometimes noisy and hides keys, books, or jewelry. Frightening off house guests is one of her favourite games.
Contrary to popular believe, there is no reference to her in the deed for the property. However, the realtor information about the house contains a section which has specific details of her “residence” in the house.
This house changed hands very rarely since it was built but every new owner had to go through a very disturbing time in the first four to six weeks after moving in. They could feel a “presence”. One even called a priest to help move the ghost out of the house. It was unsuccessful.
